Information on Becoming an Egg Donor at Our Hamilton, Somerset, Annandale, and Freehold Clinics — IVF NJ

Being an egg donor at IVF New Jersey in Somerset, Hamilton, Annandale, and Freehold can be a rewarding and satisfying experience, but any woman considering the procedure primarily for financial reasons is discouraged from participating. Read on for a description of the egg donor process and a list of upcoming informational seminars.

Egg Donor Description and Process

There are five steps involved in becoming an egg donor:

Step 1: Attend an Egg Donor Seminar

The first step in becoming an egg donor at our Hamilton, Somerset, Annandale, or Freehold practices will be to attend one of our seminars. When you arrive for the egg donor seminar, we will provide you with an information booklet containing questions and answers about the medication, surgery, risks, side effects, lifestyle restrictions, time demands of the procedures, and other medical and logistical information about being an egg donor. Also in the packet is a compilation of the stories recipients have written about why they want to have a baby and why they cannot have one using their own eggs.

As a potential egg donor, you will be asked to complete a psychological inventory containing information about depression, anxiety, stress, and motivation to be an egg donor. During the seminar, moderated by the egg donor coordinator, you will view a series of videotapes which will help you to understand how the media portrays infertility and ovum donation.

Finally, you will be asked to complete a continued interest form to help facilitate the egg donor matching process in Somerset, Hamilton, and at our other clinics. Potential egg donors have reported that seeing how much a recipient couple wanted children and how “normal” the resulting family unit appeared made them more comfortable with the idea of being egg donors.

After showing the videotapes, the physicians will talk about the medical and logistical aspects of being an egg donor. The doctors are careful to point out the discomforts and potential risks involved, as well as the demanding time schedule required by participation as an egg donor. Then, the egg donor coordinator will talk about the matching process and explain how and when each person will be contacted. A question and answer period will follow the egg donor coordinator's presentation.

Step 2: The Matching Process

After the seminar, our egg donor coordinator and the director of psychological services review the donor selection preference forms of the unmatched donor recipients, as well as the notes from the orientation session and phone conversations with recipients. They also look at the demographic information and the preliminary psychological questionnaires of potential egg donors, and then make some preliminary matches and present them to each recipient. Because this is an anonymous egg donor program, your name and any other identifying information will not be disclosed to an egg recipient.

The donor coordinator calls a recipient to tell her about a potential egg donor and to obtain permission to call the candidate to schedule a donor psychological screening session. If, based on the preliminary demographic information, the recipient does not want the coordinator to screen the egg donor, the coordinator will attempt to locate another egg donor.

If the recipient would like the coordinator to screen the egg donor, the coordinator attempts to reach the egg donor. Sometimes the egg donor candidate has changed her mind, has reconsidered her commitment, or has gotten pressure from friends and family not to be an egg donor. Sometimes it is difficult merely to reach an egg donor because of scheduling difficulties. Often, however, potential egg donor candidates are delighted to hear from the coordinator and very interested in scheduling an appointment for a psychological interview.

Step 3: The Psychological Interview

At the psychological interview, the coordinator obtains additional information concerning the egg donor's family background, goals, and aspirations; she also explores “boundary” issues. Egg donor candidates discuss in great detail why they want to be an egg donor. The candidate is urged to carefully consider the nature of her commitment in terms of lifestyle restrictions, ethical dilemmas, and medical concerns. She is advised to consult her own obstetrician/gynecologist as well as her family members and friends before making a commitment to become an egg donor at our Hamilton, Somerset, Annandale, or Freehold facilities. She is asked to call the coordinator one week later with her decision.

Step 4: Finalizing the Match

Following the interview, the coordinator and the director of psychological services review the notes from the interview to determine whether the egg donor candidate is appropriate. If the egg donor candidate is deemed to be psychologically suitable and if she commits to being a donor, the coordinator calls the recipient to inform her that the egg donor candidate is ready to move on to a medical physical examination. The egg donor coordinator takes the stance that if a candidate cannot make an unambivalent commitment, she should refrain from participating until such time that she feels absolutely sure that she wants to be an egg donor. The egg donor at our Somerset, Hamilton, and other facilities must feel that no coercion is involved in her participation.

When the coordinator calls the recipient, she reviews the information obtained during the psychological interview with the egg donor. If the recipient is still interested in this particular egg donor, the coordinator sends the recipient a cycle management agreement letter. The recipient signs the agreement and forwards it together with the donor coordinator/psychologist cycle management fee. When the signed agreement and cycle management fee are received, the egg donor is told to schedule a medical physical examination.

Step 5: The Egg Donor Medical Screening Process

Appropriate screening of egg donors includes a complete history and physical, and a detailed review of genetic and infectious diseases. There are also a number of medical tests included in the egg donor screening. The recipient receives information from the medical screening with all identifying social and personal information of the egg donor removed in order to preserve the anonymity of the donor.
