Intrauterine Insemination at our IVF New Jersey Locations: Infertility Treatment in Somerset, Freehold, Annandale, and Hamilton

Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, is an infertility procedure performed at IVF New Jersey in Somerset, Freehold, Annandale, and Hamilton. Intrauterine insemination involves the placement of motile sperm directly into the uterine cavity, increasing the chances of successful fertilization.

Specimen Collection

The sperm specimen for intrauterine insemination should be collected in a sterile cup containing "pink" fluid. The sterile specimen cup can be obtained at any one of the IVF New Jersey offices. Please store the cup in the refrigerator standing upright. The cup should be removed from the refrigerator and stand at room temperature for 30 minutes prior to collecting the specimen. The sample should be collected by masturbation without the use of soap or lubricants. The specimen for intrauterine insemination should be brought to our IVF New Jersey fertility centers in Freehold, Somerset, Hamilton, or Annandale within one hour of collection. It is important that you place the female patient's first and last name, time of collection, and number of days of abstinence on the specimen cup.

Keep the specimen warm (e.g., inside your coat, next to your body), especially while riding in your car. You must drop off the intrauterine insemination specimen at IVF New Jersey from 7:00-8:00 a.m. weekdays and 8:00-8:30 a.m. Saturdays and holidays. Sundays are by appointment only. Alternatively, the specimen may be produced at our office. This should take place no later than 8:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday.

NOTE: Intrauterine insemination infertility procedures are performed at our Somerset, Freehold, Hamilton, and Annandale, New Jersey offices monday through friday. On weekends and holidays, intrauterine inseminations are performed only at the Somerset, New Jersey office.

Intrauterine Insemination Timing

The timing of the intrauterine insemination infertility procedure at IVF New Jersey depends on the type of treatment you are receiving. If you are receiving human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or Ovidrel, you will undergo an intrauterine insemination approximately 36 to 40 hours after hCG is administered. An additional intrauterine insemination may be advised and this is performed the day after the hCG injection. If you are using an ovulation predictor kit, the intrauterine insemination will take place the day after the kit turns positive. An additional intrauterine insemination may be recommended on the second day after the kit turns positive. Please call our office on the day the kit turns positive to schedule your intrauterine insemination.

NOTE: If your test turns positive on Sunday, the intrauterine insemination infertility procedure will be performed at Somerset, Freehold, Annandale, or Hamilton, New Jersey on Monday. There is no need to call the office. Simply bring the specimen to the office between 7:00-8:00 a.m. on Monday. We will give you an appointment at that time for your intrauterine insemination at IVF New Jersey later in the morning.

The Intrauterine Insemination Procedure at IVF New Jersey

The sperm specimen for the intrauterine insemination infertility procedure is prepared in the laboratory using a procedure referred to as "sperm washing." This procedure involves the separation of actively moving sperm from the inactive sperm, seminal debris, immature sperm, and white blood cells. First, the specimen is diluted with nutrient solution and transferred to a test tube. The specimen is then gently centrifuged to separate the sperm cells from the seminal fluid. The seminal fluid is carefully removed, leaving behind a "pellet" that contains the sperm. A small amount of nutrient solution is then placed over the pellet, and the test tube is placed in an incubator for approximately half an hour to two hours. During this incubation period, the actively motile sperm "swim-up" from the pellet into the solution that has been placed on top of the pellet. At the end of the incubation period, the solution containing the motile sperm is carefully removed. The specimen is now ready for the intrauterine insemination infertility procedure. The specimen is analyzed for count and motility and the total number of motile sperm is calculated. A minimum of 1 million motile sperm is necessary for intrauterine insemination. If your specimen contains less than 1 million sperm, your physician will discuss the situation with you.

The intrauterine insemination infertility procedure at our practice in Freehold, Somerset, Hamilton, or Annandale, New Jersey begins with the placement of a speculum inside the vagina. Occasionally an instrument is used to grasp the cervix in order to immobilize and straighten the uterus. This is usually not necessary. A special catheter is then inserted through the cervix into the uterine cavity, and the sample is injected. The intrauterine insemination procedure takes only a few minutes. We ask that you remain lying down for approximately 15 minutes following the procedure. If you have any cramping you are advised to take Tylenol®.

The intrauterine insemination infertility procedure at IVF New Jersey is simple and safe with few undesirable side effects. There is a slight risk of infection as we must pass through the vagina, an area that contains bacteria. The risk of infection, however, is minimal. There is minimal or no cramping associated with the intrauterine insemination procedure.
